SurpriseThe holidays are a time for giving, and some people really like to go all out and surprise their loved ones with expensive and valuable gifts. These days, even the electronics children have on their wish lists are a financial investment and require some forethought to make sure they are protected in the event of an incident. Whether you're buying a big screen TV for a media room, extravagant jewelry, a rare collectible or even a car, you'll want to take steps to make sure these items are taken care of.
  1. Consider purchasing an extended warranty. You really have to evaluate this on a case by case basis. Sometimes it's worth it and other times it's not. Consider how much it will cost, how long it will extend the warranty and who will be the owner of the gift. For electronics, it's probably a good idea to invest in the warranty. Just be sure to keep paperwork in a safe place so you can make the claim if necessary.
  2. If shipping a gift, add insurance from the carrier for big ticket items. Insurance from delivery companies is extremely inexpensive, and if you're shipping a valuable item, it's worth it to add it on.
  3. Call your independent insurance agent. Most electronics will probably be covered under your current homeowner's or renter's policy, but valuable jewelry or collectables may need additional coverage. Your agent can advise you toward the best plan to cover these items, whether it be increasing your current policy, adding a rider to it or investing in an umbrella policy. If you're going all out and giving someone a vehicle, that will need its own auto insurance policy.
If you've been saving up to surprise a loved one, make sure that extravagant gift is covered. And don't wait until you give it to them to add insurance; make sure it's covered from the time of purchase. Anything can happen between the time you buy it to the time you give it, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

We'll help insure your gift for less. Call Get A Policy at (903) 268-1026 for more information on Dallas home insurance.
